5/21/2026 - Server Rack Weight Limit Exceeded - De-Rack & Re-Rack - EST DT: <10 HRs - FINAL

Updated: May 21

Let me tell you -- the one thing you never want to do is undervalue the weight limit of your server rack. Now I know you've all got a server rack in your house so this directly affects you, but for those who don't, fair warning: if you buy a rack rated for 400–600 lbs assuming that's all you've got... and your servers actually weigh closer to 600–900 lbs... you're going to have a bad time. That's exactly what I ran into.

The rack I had fully set up started bending inward -- literally bowing the steel from the weight — and nearly tipping over. I had to buy a new one. This new rack is rated for 1,200 lbs, weighted well over what I need on purpose, so we never have this conversation again.

The rack that's currently caving in on itself wasn't even running all the servers. If I had loaded everything onto it I'm pretty confident it would have collapsed into the wall. Glad we caught it first.

I wish I could say this is a 5-minute fix. It is not. Every server comes off one by one, every rail unscrewed and removed, then the whole thing gets redone on the new rack in order so it all comes back up cleanly. Expect the server down basically all day. My goal is to have everything back up by end of day so Friday and the full weekend we're clean -- no more disruptions. I can't predict hard drive failure (knocking on wood), but once this is done, we should be putting a lot of these service interruptions behind us for good.

UPDATE! Server is up as of 10:30EST! Enjoy! Upgraded to a 10gig card maxing out the 5gig speed my ISP is giving me, so IDEALLY Plex SHOULD play more smoothly now! Thank you!
