4-16/17/18 -2026 - Planned Server Downtime - Plex Offline - Server Relocation - DT <5hrs (UPDATED)

Updated: Apr 18

The Plex server will be going offline Friday morning, 4/17, for a planned relocation to a new physical location.

This is not a simple restart -- the server must be fully broken down, transported, rebuilt, and validated at the new location including port forwarding, application checks, and a new ISP being brought online.

Estimated downtime is 4 to 5 hours, but may run longer. You may also see the server go down prior to Friday as pre-shutdown checks are completed.

Check the updates channel for progress as it comes in. Update! 4/16/2026 8:15 EST I've started the de-racking process of the server in preparation for the move, so be aware you're going to see the server go down for approximately an hour or less (today 4/16 evening) while I de-rack and pull the server apart into pieces. I will be bringing it back online tonight for it to be continued on and then in the morning it will go offline temporarily for four to five hours while we move the server to the new location. Update! 4/16/2026 11:12 EST I de-racked everything and suddenly it's not seeing all of the other hard drives. But now I'm diagnosing that and trying to get everything back online again for everybody to bear with. Update! 4/17/2026 — 12:36 ESTRESOLVED

We're back. Plex is online.

What was supposed to be a clean 1 hour de-rack turned into a longer ordeal than expected. During the de-rack process, one of the storage controllers came up in a degraded state, it was presenting the enclosure to the system but not exposing the underlying drives. This caused the ZFS pool to come up faulted, which meant Plex had no media to serve.

After several hours of diagnostics, we identified a partition table inconsistency on the storage layer that required a manual pool recovery and remount sequence to resolve cleanly. No data was lost, everything is intact and verified.

All pools are back online, Plex is serving content, and everything has been validated.

Appreciate everyone's patience. Keep in mind the server will only be up to about 8 in the morning. Around 8 o'clock it will go offline again and will not come back online until another 5 or 6 hours. Probably afternoon or evening. So just be aware of that and be patient. moving to a new location with a whole nother isp and i gotta validate everything is working and no corruption all over again so uh i'm crossing my fingers and my toes everything goes well but for the night enjoy flex while it's still working i will get it all back working at the new location soon.

Update! 4/18/2026 -- Heads Up: Move Happening Today (within the hour)

First, an apology. I was not able to complete the physical server relocation yesterday as planned. After spending the day moving everything in the house, I was completely wiped. Physically exhausted and too sore to safely handle server equipment on top of everything else. I made the call to rest rather than risk making a mistake with the hardware.

The move is happening today instead. The server will be going offline this afternoon for the relocation to the new house. If everything goes smoothly, Plex should be back online by this evening.

One thing I want to be upfront about, this will not be the last outage related to this move. Getting the server to the new location is only part of the process. The server rack hasn't arrived yet, so once it does there will be another maintenance window to properly rack everything, clean up the cabling, and get the infrastructure fully set up the right way.

I'll post updates as things progress. Thanks again for your patience, I know this has been a longer process than any of us wanted.

Update! 4/18/2026 — We're Live at the New Location PLEX IS BACK AND FASTER!!!!!

The hardware has been successfully moved to the new house and Plex is back online.

However, and I want to be transparent about this, this is a temporary setup. The server is running, but it is not yet properly racked or fully configured in its permanent home. Think of it as sitting on the floor with cables run just well enough to get things working.

By end of this week, the server will be going offline one final time to be mounted in an official rack with proper cable management and a clean, stable infrastructure setup. That will be the last move-related outage. Once it's in the rack it's not coming back out.

Downtime for the racking process should be minimal, a few hours at most, and I'll give plenty of advance notice before that happens.

After that, we're done. Fully settled, fully racked, and back to normal operations at the new location for the long haul.

Thanks for sticking with me through all of this.
